WORD ON THE STREET
"RAISING THE BAR. The chandelier replaced the disco ball and Champagne became the chaser
of choice as luxe lounges took the SF nightlife scene by storm this past year... 10 swanky
newcomers that returned the art of dinking to its more civilized roots...
9. SIP BAR & LOUNGE.
What: A post-pasta stop specializing in cocktails with a caffeine kick.
Order: Mint Chip Martini (Starbucks Espresso Liqueur, dash of Ketel One,
creme de menthe and a splash of cream." (2/06, 7x7 Magazine)
"This Broadway hotspot has a chic, sexy, low-key vibe with very little attitude. Drenched in rich,
warm browns, and accented with cushy leather sofas, low-slung tables and loads of velvet pillows,
and movies running silently on a projection screen as DJs spin an eclectic mix of hip hop, new
wave, and more. A more secluded bottle service area offers more intimacy. Sip rounds things out
with superlative service and inventive cocktails." (5/30/05, JoonBlog New York)
"FINALLY. A bar in SF with good tunes and a nice crowd that is not so packed you have to don shoulder
pads and kleats to wedge your way up to the bar... it is a nice little bar sanctuary in North Beach.
Hallelujah." (7/25/05, Lindsey B., yelp.com)
"The combination of an upscale look and a low-key, friendly attitude is a rare find among the city's many
lounges. But that's what you'll find a Sip. Just a stone's throw from the Broadway Tunnel, the bar
occupies Blind Tiger's former digs and sits within easy walking distance of many North Beach
restaurants and nightlife venues. The owner is usually working behind the bar and is more than
happy to chat with patrons when he's not busy making his special mojito with dark rum.
A bonus for some and not for others, the venue's owner-operated status means smoking is allowed
inside. Music ranges from popular hip hop to retro 80s, dance hits to funk.
While the venue's layout remains similar to its predecessor's, the space is now awash in golden
lighting, neutral tans and coffee-colored browns. Carrying on the color scheme, specialty cocktails
include several with Starbucks coffee liqueur. In addition to the long bar and ample seating available
up front, there is a comfortable lounge area hidden in the back of the bar. Take the short flight
of stairs, turn the corner and you'll find a dimly lit hangout area with black leather couches, a
groovy fake fireplace and plush velvet curtains.
The bar almost never charges a cover, but on the rare evening that it does, you can still get in for free
if you join the guest list in advance. Visit the Web site for more information."

"North Beach techno hot spot Blind Tiger has lost the fight to a cat of a groovier stripe; hip young patrons
slither amid softly lit white and brown decor, purr over elegant cocktails, prance on the dance
floor or curl up in black-leather seats beside the fake fireplace in the back as the music howls
and movies lick the big screen opposite the bar." (8/3/05, Julie S., Zagat Guide)
